People think outsourcing is huge corporations sending all their work overseas, including manufacturing and production and, as any one who’s spoken with a call center know, their customer service operations. But outsourcing isn’t just for the big guys. Small businesses, if they know what they’re doing, can use outsourcing effectively, domestically and internationally.

Marketing or payroll can be outsourced to save you time and money, allowing you and your employees to focus more on the essentials such as sales. This could lead to other outsourcing opportunities once you see what isn’t essential to your in-house operations.

The more services an outsourcing company provides you, the more you’ll save. You’re buying in bulk. If, for instance, you consider a company for your printing, that company could also design your ads, mailing lists and mailings. Many printing companies today offer full-service marketing for your business. Or take accounting: Accounting firms can also handle your payroll and taxes.

many people don’t think about how important due diligence is. They go for the cheapest. But – as you’ve no doubt discovered, you get what you pay for. The cheapest company may give you the cheapest work, which may not the best solution for your needs. Evaluate outsourcing companies as you would a prospective employee. Check backgrounds, initiative, ethos, personality – everything you would when you interview a new employee. After all – even if you’re outsourcing, it’s still an important part of what your company is. An outsourcing company is, after all, a kind of employee at a distance.

In the end, you’ll want to make sure you have clear deadlines and specifications set for your different projects. This alone will save you much frustration and time.

Traditionally, businesses have always had their own financial department. They have traditionally employed their own financial staff of accountants and tax experts that deals with the weekly or monthly payroll, working out who gets what and what the amount of tax each employee should pay, as well as PAYE and other necessary issues.

All this costs the business money. And when you consider that the financial department does not contribute to the profits of the business, they start to look more like a liability that an asset. And yet, they are needed. Employees need their wages sorted out, their tax deducted at source, and the correct benefits, if any, allotted to them.

While there was no easy answer, businesses continued to have their own financial departments. Now, however, there is an option; the payroll outsourcing business. This is a business that offers its financial services to other businesses. It becomes the remote financial department and it takes away the need for an in-house financial department.

There only remains the matter of trust. Can the small business trust another company with the sensitive details of its employees? That is what most small business owners think when they first consider this option. And of course, they can. A payroll outsourcing business knows full well that they have to be trusted, and they place confidentiality and security foremost with what they do.

So, what are the incentives for a small business owner to hand over the running of their payroll needs to another business? It is generally one of cost. The payroll outsourcing business can undercut the traditional way of maintaining a financial department every time. They can offer savings of around fifty percent to the small business owner, and when you consider that maintaining a financial department is not a cheap option, this alone usually swings the deal.

Businesses offering payroll services and other financial services know that their continued contract with a small business depends on continued satisfaction. To this end they usually try to make their services blend in as much as possible with the small businesses existing situation.

They will usually assign a team of financial experts to the small business. These will be people that can be contacted directly, real people who will answer a telephone call, or reply to an email message, thereby giving the impression of having employees. This approach makes the payroll outsourcing business seem friendlier and more immediate, and it works out better for all parties involved.

As we move steadily forward into the 21st century, many of the old, more traditional ways of running businesses are giving way to a more modern, in many ways, more efficient way of doing business. Many things remain, but with the advent of the payroll outsourcing business, the need to retain a financial department is becoming less common.

With the changing global economy, and the excessive costs associated with keeping an in-house staff for secondary functions, many of today’s small businesses and corporations are outsourcing the production of goods and services to foreign firms in an effort to cut costs. While many critics argue that this can devastate local economies by cutting jobs at home, success is often a balancing act between meeting customer and community demands and also maximizing profits.

While there are certainly ethical decisions to be made for many of these businesses, there are a number of pros and cons to offshore outsourcing. While many criticize the act of outsourcing production by large corporations, there are a number of US firms that continue to provide outsourcing and remote service jobs for small businesses in the US that cannot afford to maintain a large full time staff and also foreign businesses as well.

One of the biggest benefits of global outsourcing is that it allows for increased efficiency within larger organizations. Although a number of less-skilled jobs are often lost to overseas production facilities, the increased efficiency allows these organizations to create more skilled positions and implement improved strategic plans. In addition, the benefit for many consumers is that they can enjoy decreased prices created by increased levels of efficiency, which can in turn promote greater economic growth. The drive for lower prices and the increased demands of consumers for businesses to compete is one of the largest factors that drive many corporations to move production to offshore facilities.

For these large corporations, one of the downfalls of outsourcing that has the potential to do the most damage is decreased quality control, minimal product development and improvement, and lower quality materials and workmanship that go into products. In the US, and in many other countries as well, poor quality products have the potential for increased liability and lawsuits, as well as exposure by consumers to certain materials that can be deadly.

Another one of the biggest disadvantages of offshore outsourcing that is particularly detrimental to smaller companies, is the communication barrier that often exists between foreign countries of production where another language is spoken and companies in other countries that speak a different native language. However, increases in technology are working to reduce this barrier and make global communication possible for everyone.
